Campaign to Reduce Risk assignment

Context Imagine that you are a member of a team at the Chicago Department of Public Health working on harm reduction for “emerging adults.” You have accumulated data that indicates that the population of emerging adults (18-30) is at higher risk for a number of health-related problems. You are now being asked to identify one particular risk that impacts this population or a subgroup within this population and to develop an informational campaign to address it. That means creating a message that can help change a risky behavior through words. (Please note that you are not being asked to conduct research nor to plan a long-term intervention.) You must provide a rationale for the campaign based upon evidence from the scientific literature that the issue that you choose is indeed a problem in this population so your “team” can plan an appealing and appropriate informational intervention to reduce its impact. While you will need to make some choices this paper is not about your personal opinion. It is meant to be a brief program proposal grounded in scientific evidence. The paper should not exceed 1500 words exclusive of tables and figures and the list of references. Follow Steps 1-7 in developing your paper. Please use the APA style manual for citations and referencing: (https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html) Begin by reading and developing a succinct focus for your paper. You will create a partial preliminary draft by completing steps 1 2 and 3. Organize your thoughts before you begin to write. Generate a thought map or an outline that reflects the major points and topics that will be addressed in your paper. Write an introductory paragraph that prepares the reader for what is to come. Write 4 or 5 cohesive paragraphs that reflect the population data that supports the risk you have chosen. Include citations from the literature in this part of your paper. Step 3 will conclude your draft with the campaign slogan. This initial draft is due Feb. 15 2021. While submitting a draft is not mandatory you will receive feedback that is likely to lead to a better product as you will use this feedback to refine and complete Steps 1-7 in your final paper. The next steps you write are dependent on the work you have done in Steps 1 2 and 3. You are advised to visit the Writing Center to seek additional resources that will enhance your written communication. Step 1. Read To begin the assignment read the background materials posted on the Blackboard site in association with the assignment. These readings are for background only and do not suffice or substitute for the scientific literature that supports the problem you are identifying in the following steps. The readings pertain to the description of challenges in emerging adulthood and social marketing. It would be immensely helpful to review the videos about writing scientific papers. Step 2. Choose a Focus Select one risk to the health of emerging adults (18-30yrs. old) e.g. sexually transmitted infections gang violence binge drinking depression etc. and describe the behaviors of emerging adults related to that risk. In addition to the above readings you will need to search and include data and information from at least five additional scientific references that provide facts about the problem and help you to develop a rationale for your informational campaign. You may include tables or figures but you must follow the rules for citing these. Write this step of your paper describing short AND long-term health consequences of the risky behavior you have selected based upon the scientific literature. (3 pts.) Step 3a. Identify Behavior(s) That You Can Change with Information State one or two behaviors that you would like to change relative to the named population risk. Why is it important to address this risk behavior? Beyond the individual what impact does the behavior have on the population of emerging adults? (2 pts.) Step 3b. Plan an Informational Campaign Succinctly state the objective of your campaign. What do you hope to accomplish by providing information? Craft a succinct message that is likely to be well received by emerging adults and your specific target group. Make sure to read the two articles pertaining to informational campaigns and social marketing posted on the course Blackboard site in conjunction with this assignment. (2 pts.) In light of what you understand about emerging adults select and describe a strategy to disseminate the message and the information that is relevant to the target audience. Describe what kinds of resources the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) will need to implement the strategy. Go to the CDPH website to familiarize yourself with what kinds of things this agency does what resources it has and what populations it serves. (2 pts.) https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/cdph.html Step 5. Identify Partners Since virtually all of public health entails partnerships who would your potential partners be in this initiative? (Remember that you are theoretically working for the Chicago Department of Public Health. Please select your partners accordingly.) What will your partners contribute to the effort? Be reasonable and realistic. Celebrity spokespersons are not acceptable for this assignment. (2 pts.) Step 6. Plan an Evaluation to Judge Effectiveness of the Campaign How will you know if your risk reduction campaign has been effective? How will you know if your message has reached the intended audience? How will you measure success or failure? What “metric” or standard of measurement will you use that will let you know if you have met the objective of your campaign? (2 pts.) Step 7. Check Grammar & Composition Check your paper for grammatical errors. Did you introduce and develop your thoughts logically? Ask someone else to read and comment on your paper before submitting it. When you are satisfied with your paper submit it through SafeAssign. (2 pts.)
