Carr’s term paper

In your paper’s first paragraph summarize the essay. Consider what Carr claims to the change is how people read why they read different and if this is a positive or negative change. What does Carr mean when he explains that the Internet “has been tinkering with my brain remapping the neurological circuitry reprogramming my memory. My mind isn’t going—so far as I can tell—but it’s changing” (para. 2)? A summary should be about half a page in length. A summary must be one unified coherent and organized paragraph. Analyze the piece being summarized and interpret the author’s main and supporting ideas. In your paper’s second paragraph bridge from the summary to a point stating your opinion on the overall validity of Carr’s argument. Considers how he uses induction and deduction to structure his essay. Examine what type of evidence—facts statistics expert opinion and anecdotes—that he uses and its validity. You can also consider when Carr quotes Sergey Brin one of the founders of Google when Brin claims “Certainly if you had all the world’s information directly attached to your brain or an artificial brain that was smarter than your brain you’d be better off” (qtd. in Carr para. 26). What does Sergey seem to be equating with being “smart”? Is access to massive amounts of information the same as being intelligent? Moreover in paragraphs 30 and 31 Carr highlights Socrates’ concerns when oration became written and concerns raised when Guttenberg’s printing press could then mass produce written text. What are these concerns? At the end of each paragraph Carr offers an optimistic viewpoint that writing has “expand[ed] human knowledge” (para. 30) and that there are a “myriad of blessings that the printed word [has] deliver[ed]” (para. 31). Then he goes on to address the reader with “so yes you should be skeptical of my skepticism” (para. 32). What is he proposing that readers should take away from this point?
