In crisis communications it’s important to always be as transparent and honest as possible. Companies and individuals are often defined by their communication styles — and especially by their communication in crisis situations. As PR Writing students you must learn the art of reassuring various stakeholders and addressing the issue. Things to remember: recognize the problem (acknowledge the issue) express empathy (show concern and sympathy for those who have been affected but ensure you are aligned with legal before issuing a formal apology) take action (show customers or stakeholders that you are taking steps to rectify the situation and ensure that something similar cannot happen again) and give reassurance (try to put the incident into context). ACTIVITY OVERVIEW: In this graded assignment choose three scenarios from the below hypothetical situations and draft an initial response statement between 55-75 words. You may use the internet for guidance or inspiration from similar real situations that have occurred. Here are the two (2) assumptions: 1) All of the scenarios did in fact happen (statements shouldnt be denials of the fact). 2) The statements would be posted on the partys social media and/or sent to the media. She is winning by a large margin in the polls against her opponent Deangelo Fields two weeks before the election when a former neighbor of Pipescale alleges that she saw Pipescale yell and hit her children when disciplining them. Local TV cameras are now trailing Pipescale looking for a response. An organic makeup company’s user base is made up primarily of teenage girls. One 13-year-old broke out in a rash on her face after using the “Cheeky Blush” product and posted a “rash” video of it on TikTok. Now comments from girls claiming they have had rashes from the makeup are beginning to spike. Devan Xicara is a hockey player that has just been signed to a large salary deal with the Boston Bruins. After his signing a reporter claims to have dug up Xicara’s inflammatory social media posts from five years prior in which he uses racially insensitive language and homophobic slurs. The Bruins have asked him to respond publicly. Adia Rezy is a 20-year-old pop singer with two hit songs out. TMZ just reported that she held a large “fundraising” party at her Beverly Hills mansion for a local charity and that a number of guests from the party who came in person now have COVID-19 and there may be many more cases to come. Worse paparazzi pictures have come to life showing guests at her backyard pool party without masks and not socially distancing. Bennie Schreiber is President of the Tampa International Speedway which has a huge and diverse racing fanbase. He was recently caught on a passerby’s video during a #BlackLivesMatter protest sparring against peaceful protesters and shouting what appears to be obscenities.
