Critical Analysis Project

For The Exchange you will write a compelling piece of 300-600 words for an audience of OSU students. This is a very diverse audience so there are many options! Some of the most successful submissions have been editorials (an opinion piece on a topical issue). For example if you feel passionately about the topic of your Critical Analysis Project you might write a potent editorial to raise awareness of that issue and perhaps argue for public action.

For The Exchange you are not required to write an editorial but it is an excellent genre to practice creating a powerful argument. For this week’s Discussion you get to choose and analyze an editorial. Watch for writing strategies that you might adapt in your own writing! Choose an editorial on a topic that intrigues you. You can google aseditorial” along with a topic (mental health education etc.). Alternatively simply googling aseditorial” will bring up editorial pages from some varied sources like the New York Times Seattle Times Chicago Tribune and others which you can skim for an opinion piece that catches your eye. Please title your post with title of the editorial. First provide the article title author website date. Then answer the following questions: For Tuesday Attendance please make your post by Tuesday of Week 7. For Thursday Attendance please make responses to at least two of your peers by Thursday of Week 7. Ways to respond might be to read the editorial another student has analyzed and comment on that. This is also a great chance to discuss The Exchange and types of writing that would be valuable/fun/fascinating/moving to introduce to a student audience. As an OSU student what sort of student writing would you like to read? Requirements: very explained.

Summarize the argument. Are you persuaded? What evidence did the author provide? What other information would give you a clearer idea about this issue? What audience does this piece seem to appeal to? Can you think of an audience that might be alienated or offer a contrary argument? Describe how this writer’s word choice tone transitions and any other stylistic strategies helped them to get their point across. What was the weakest point in this writing? What feedback would you provide to the author to improve? What was the strongest point of this writing? What are you considering writing about for The Exchange? Is there a conversation you would like to start among OSU’s student body; is there change you would like to inspire? Are you going to try your hand at an editorial or is there another genre you would like to see in this student publication?
