There is a difference between reading & comprehending and writing & writing effectively. Comprehension & effective writing lead to a better understanding of the material. What are your most effective strategies are for reading comprehension &/or writing – how do you work to comprehend the material & produce your writing? You don’t have to list fancy names or titles – just tell us what works best for you. Based on Poole’s preface, what would you think were some research questions he possibly used to start his research? Based on Poole’s preface, what would be some research questions you would ask in response to him? The purpose of a Proposal is to introduce not only the topic being written about but the methodology behind it & the reason for the author’s interest. Poole’s preface functions like a Proposal to the topic that he will cover in the next 200+ pages of his book. If we treat it like a Proposal, explain in your own words what Poole hopes to accomplish with his research. Thinking about the Purposes for Research & Research-Based Writing, what do you think the purpose for Poole’s work is? Explain your answer by referring to the text. Why shouldn’t you automatically consider your instructor as your audience? I am a reader, yes, but I may not be your audience. What are some of the reasons why it can negatively impact your work to think of me as your ONLY audience? Think about the topic you have selected to write about – as of right now, who do you think is the audience for your argument? Who are you writing to/for & why? The Quick Box 3.1 on pg17 offers a list of questions critical thinkers ask about material they’re exposed to. Which of these questions do you struggle with the most & why? How can the persuasive rhetoric devices of pathos, logos, & ethos (on p18) be used to help influence your writing structure & audience? How does the ability to think critically help in the creation of research questions &/or arguments? How can critical thinking help you, as a writer, to be clearer for your readers & audience? How can critical thinking, as a reader, help you to better understand another writer’s point/argument?
