After watching The Chambermaid (please rent his film on Youtube for $4) and reading the New York Times article, “New Sites of Urban Unrest,” (see link in D2L) please post a response to the following question. And please respond to at least two posts by other students. Requirements: answer the prompt Connect what you observed in The Chambermaid with issues raised in “New Sites of Urban Unrest.” You might also add insights you gained from the film not mentioned in the article. Some background: The Chambermaid features a maid working at a luxury hotel in Mexico City…though it seems she could be working in any country. The film reflects a modern urban economy that has created a class to exploit, modern “serfs” (house cleaners, hotel workers, Uber drivers, nannies, gardeners, etc.), a new subset of service jobs that exist because of the wealth of other people. Across the world, low-wage jobs are disproportionately held by minority workers (George Floyd was a security guard at a restaurant/nightclub who lost his job during the pandemic.), and the disappearance of middle-class jobs (clerical, manufacturing, etc.) is being replaced by this so-called “wealth work” where low-wage workers serve the comfort and convenience of affluent individuals. It’s worth reflecting on how the anger of recent protests is not just about the deep injustice of police brutality, but also about the injustice of corporate control of our democracy.
