Respond by Day 5 to a colleague who chose a case different from yours by addressing the following: DB 1 Stephanie— Hello Class For this discussion I chose the case study of Levy. Jake defines the social problem as lack of access and or availability to suicide prevention policies and or programs at the VA to all veterans. He contends that rather than offering help to only those who seek assistance in managing their mental health issues the VA should make it a policy to help and have programs for all veterans to prevent suicide among this population (Laureate Education 2013). From this position Jake was able to empathize with veterans like his late friend and others who feels as if they had no help to deal with their mental health concerns and decided to end their lives. He clearly understood the military culture (Jansson 2018; Laureate Education 2013). Jake also took it a step above to research the issue and presented data he found on the Internet (Laureate Education 2013). He found that the prevalence and the effect of untreated mental concerns too often lead to suicide. Jakes definition of the problem demonstrates his willingness to make a change. He believes in social justice where all veterans must have equal access to suicide prevention interventions. He indicated that he wanted to start a program that is similar the one he found on the internet; to help veterans dealing with the suicide of a loved one or their own suicidal ideations (Laureate Education 2013).He values service to humanity and of human relationships to others. He also values ethics as he sees implications in the VA’s policy and proposed a solution. Jake’s values and ideology align with the social work Code of Ethics as outlined in the (National Association of Social Workers 2017). Some things that are being omitted in this definition are the underlying issues leading to suicide and what actions are being taken to prevent suicide. Some other problems that were not acknowledged were that Jake did not provide data that evidence that anything was done in the past that works to prevent veterans from carrying out suicide he did not look outside of the VA to see if there are other established programs to address the issue in his state and the political aspects surrounding the issue. Jake is understandably upset and does research regarding the supports in place for veterans who are struggling. He quickly realizes that while an estimated 22 veterans commit suicide daily there is a severe lack of resources to help them prevent this from occurring or provide support (Laureate Education 2013). Jake defines the problem as a lack of services and supports; his therapist identifies the problem as a lack of funding for such programs (Laureate Education 2013). The values being reflected in these definitions of the problem are empowerment service and the dignity and worth of the individual. Certain factors that are being omitted from these definitions of the problem are analyzing the cause of the problem (why do so many veterans commit suicide in the first place) why are there no preventative measures in place and why is the priority on treatment and not prevention (Jansson 2018). Other problems related to the prevalence of veteran suicides include: socialization of men to not ask for help military training discouraging asking for help (frequently asking for help results in a discharge due to non-deployability) a lack of societal awareness of the prevalence of veteran suicides and the lack of addressing training and experiences in the military that lead to PTSD and suicide.
