The essay needs to be grounded in a historical context. You can use the textbook as one additional source but don’t include the textbook in the bibliography assignment above. Likewise you may use the primary sources we read in class but you need to find one other primary source in addition (this additional source can be another text written by the authors of the primary sources on the syllabus or another passage (not read for class) from the primary sources assigned for the class). The essay will have a thesis (a historical argument) and you will draw on the primary and secondary sources to support this thesis. Make sure your topic is narrow enough (temporally geographically etc.) so you can articulate and defend a focused and specific thesis. Cite your sources using Chicago style. More direction and material will be provided further.
