Siddhartha the Buddha set out to change the way human beings saw the world. He wanted to teach people how to deal with the everyday hardships of life. We wonder why we get sick, why our family member past on, how we are born into such a way of living. With his teachings Buddha taught his followers how to live happily and peacefully. The main goal of teaching and practicing Buddhism is for one to learn about their life, also to learn how to cope with the battles of life. Buddha started Buddhism about 2,500 years ago. Born around 566 BC in India Buddha’s father was King Suddhodana his mother was Queen Maya. Buddhism is one of the major religions in the world. It was predicted by wise men that Siddhartha would either be a great ruler or wise teacher. When his father heard this, he was deeply disturbed. He was convinced that he would make life so pleasant in the palace for his son that he would never want to leave. At the age of sixteen Siddhartha married princess Yasodhara. The king built them three lavished palaces. They passed their days in enjoyment and never thought about life outside the palace. Four sightings that Buddha experienced in his life changed him. Outside of the walls of his palace he witnessed sickness, old age, and death.

On his fourth trip outside the walls he saw a monk who had given up everything to end his suffering. Buddha found inspiration in that monk and wanted to mirror his actions. He left his family and endured great suffering from living like he had nothing. The name for his basic teaching were the Dharma. Buddha basic teachings were pretty simple nothing is lost in the universe, everything changes, and law of cause and effect. Buddha came up with the concept of there being four truths. These truths were simply suffering, the cause of suffering, the end of suffering, and the path to ending suffering better known as the “Eightfold Path” or the “Middle Way”. The Noble Eightfold Path were the right view, right thought, right speech, right conduct, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and the right concentration. Buddha knew it would be hard for people to follow his teaching alone, so he created the triple jewel. The Buddha is the guide. The dharma is the path, and the Sangha are the teachers and companions along the way. The five precepts were the conducts that Buddha saw as good. No killing, no stealing, no sexual misconduct, no lying, no intoxicants. Buddhists do not believe that death is the end of life. When one dies, one’s consciousness leaves and enters one of the six paths of rebirth which is The Wheel of Life. As a heavenly being, human, Asura, hungry ghost, or hell being. The only way to escape the wheel of life is to eliminate greed, hatred, and stupidity from your life. Last of all in Buddha’s teachings were the levels of enlightenment one could reach. Buddha was perfect in enlightenment. Bodhissttvas enlighten themselves as well as others. Last but not least Arhats are those who enlighten themselves.
