The textbook mentions two examples of brain growth, or spurts, in this age period. One has to do with an increase in eye-hand coordination in the 6-8 age (probably from maturation of the parietal lobe), and the second is frontal lobe maturation in the 10-12 age range, creating increased ability for logic, planning, and memory. For this answer, think back to when you were 10-12 years old (5th to 7th grades), and come up with three examples…one for logic, one for planning, and one for memory, that you can remember being tasked with at this age. They could be from your parents, or teachers at school. 2. Check out the pie graphs in Figure 5.2 on p. 166. Discuss for this answer which group you were in during middle school. It doesn’t have to be from school. It could be you and your friends ‘organizing’ a game on your own. Then describe your sports memories from this period. Were you able to enjoy sports…either participating, or watching on TV? Was a particular coach/teacher able to help you feel good about participating, whether it was against others, or on improving yourself? 3. Read through the paragraphs on Concrete Operational Thought. This is hands-on learning, where kids at this age learn through touching, manipulating, and physically arranging and rearranging objects. Think back to elementary and middle school and for this answer, write about two or three hands-on experiences you had in school, or something your parents taught you, that you enjoyed and remember to this day. 4. Critical Thinking is an important and diverse set of skills to learn. There are many ways to think critically, and as a definition of it, we’ll say it is examining ideas, methods, or strategies for how well they work, if they make sense, and can we apply them to specific situations. Take notes on it, and then summarize those notes here for this answer. 6. First look up ‘Creative Intelligence’ in Google and then click on Images. In the space where you would write this answer, instead, draw a detailed picture of one of the more complicated images of Creative Intelligence. Be sure to include all labels, and really try to fill up the whole space where this answer would go. 7. First, read the section on cyber-bullying. Then summarize a few of the important points here, in your own words. Then look up and watch a YouTube video on the subject, and based on what you see, write some more on the topic for this answer. 8. Read the two paragraphs about gay and lesbian parenting. And as you are reading through it, jot down any thoughts, reactions, or opinions of your own that aren’t from the paragraphs, and then after you are done reading, write down a few of those thoughts, reactions, or opinions for this answer. Ch. 6 – Adolescence 1. Explain and describe the differences between Primary and Secondary sexual characteristics. 2. Read through the section on Effects of Pubertal Age. Then for this answer talk about how this affected your social development in high school, or write about how other students you knew of in high school were influenced in their social development by these changes. For example, how might having an early appearing hairy chest or beard affect a boy’s social development? 3. Look at Figure 6.8 on teenage births rates. The textbook suggests the drop in the rate in recent years may have to do with less sexually active teenagers, or more contraceptive use. For this one, come up with a couple other possibilities, in your opinion or based on experience, for why there is a drop. You could use examples from TV or high school to fill out this answer. For example, maybe sexual activity is the same, but the drinking water in our country is increasingly polluted, leading to more spontaneous abortions. 4. Read about Piaget’s Formal Operational Stage of cognitive development and then for this answer, you’ll engage in some abstract thinking. On a separate full piece of copier paper, do two things. 1) Draw an aerial view of the property you live on using only your imagination/abstract thinking ability (see attached image for an example). Start by imagining and drawing the exact shape of your property line. Then fill in all the structures like in the attached image, using only your imagination/memory. If you do the drawing correctly, you won’t see any windows, walls, doors, or tree trunks (except for a dot, like in the attached image). And then, 2) go to Google Maps/Satellite view and type in your address to see how close your drawing matches the real thing. Be sure to send me a picture of your full-page drawing. 5. Describe the differences in Intuitive and Analytical Thinking, and then give a couple of examples of yourself using each. For example, intuitive would be guessing correctly what time it is without looking at a clock, and analytic would be planning your afternoon. 6. Look up and watch a YouTube video on High School Dropouts, and summarize what you have learned from it here. 7. Read through the section on Ethnic Identity, and then discuss some activities you would suggest for people learn to appreciate ethnicities other than their own. For example, dinner at home on Wednesdays could be from a different culture every week. Also, you may do something with clothing, music, or language. 8. Read through the section on Parents and Teens. Then discuss a little about your teenage years and your relationship with your parents/parent/caregivers. Was it all stress and turmoil, like you see in the movies, or did you and they get along fine, and maybe went to each other to talk openly and share your lives. Ch. 7 – Emerging and Early Adulthood 1. In the section titled Emerging Adulthood Defined, the book states “Emerging adulthood is a time of life when many different directions remain possible, when little about the future is decided for certain, when the scope of independent exploration
of life’s possibilities is greater for most people than it will be at any other period of the life course”.

Give an example of how you did it, or how you could do it. For example, is it better to lie, if the truth is going to hurt someone’s feelings? 8. Read through the section on Love, and in the sub-sections on the different types of love relationships, pick any one that you have experienced and write about that for this answer.
