HURL 102: White Fragility

Description:

For the past two weeks, we have been reading Robin DiAngelo’s book, White Fragility, as well as discussing topics of whiteness and white privilege. In this This reflection journal you should discuss the following information, according to DiAngelo:

  • Define White Fragility. What does it “look” like? Why do people display white fragility? What is the purpose/motive of white fragility?

  • What does the author mean when she says that white people are not, in fact, racially innocent? How can we know much about race if we have lived separately?

  • Why are white people more receptive to other white people (rather than people of color) educating them on race? What does this say about the role white people must play in addressing systemic racism in society broadly and specifically in our homes, with our friends and family members, and in our workplaces with our colleagues?

  • How can white people continue the work of anti-racism?

  • Based upon this book, what are two of the most significant takeaways that you gained from reading this book? Please explain and discuss efficiently.

  • Discuss, in full detail, the meaning and relevance to the topic of three of the following concepts from the book:
    • Emotions being political
    • Racism as a structure, not an event
    • Anti-Blackness
    • Cardinal rules when giving feedback to white people
    • The Good/Bad Binary
    • White racial equilibrium

  • Make a minimum of 3 connections to specific information presented in White Fragility to specific course topics from previous weeks.

*Reminder * This refection journal is not a summary of the book or of the articles read, it is your interpretation of the information presented and making connections to topics discussed during the previous weeks of the semester. You can also weave your personal experiences into the reflection journal.
