Immigrant and Ethnicity

Introduction

During the period of realism, different scholars came up with different understandings of education, school and the role of education. John Dewey is one of the educational scholars whose work impacted greatly on the modern system and the role of education. According to John, education is meant to improve the social perspective of a child, taking place in a social environment. The three most important from the reading include:

As I read the article, Public Education Under Criticism by Winfield and Clyde, the following quote seemed relevant to me, ‘the school’s obligation is to carry the cultural and liberal association to the fullest possible extent for each individual, but the many it will not be greatly extended or highly complicated educational process in terms of the academic liberal tradition’ (p. 62). This is important as people have been thinking that the role of the school is just to impact skills and knowledge to learners. The quote relates to John Dewey’s talk on My Pedagogic Creed that school should be promoting the social roles of individuals. Thus, individuals are talking about the same things.

As I read the article The Problem of Indian Administration by Lewis Merriam, the following quote seemed relevant to me, “However, teachers of industrial work undertaken ostensibly for education say that much of it is as a matter of fact production work for the maintenance of the school” (p.13). Fact production does not support the psychological structure and social development of the child leading to most of the problems the Indians are facing. The quote is closely related to Dewy talk on My Pedagogic Creed, who said that without insight into activities and psychological structures, the process of education will be arbitrary.

Finally, after reading the article, Public Education Under Criticism by Winfield and Clyde, the following quote seemed relevant to me, “Our school system seems to presuppose, that for education to be democratic, every man’s child must be treated as the equal of every other both in kinds of brain and educability” (p. 63). This is important in the modern system of education to show equality and the social development of the child. It relates to Dewey’s talk on My Pedagogic Creed, the nature of the method used in education should promote the social development of the child.

Assignment 2

From the  Podcast by Malcom Gladwell, titled, “Miss Buchanan’s Period Of Adjustment”, the major idea is that the victory the Brown V. Board of education has is not the right one. Teachers have been undergoing continued racism and segregation making things to be worse. The supreme court failed to perform its roles. Looking at history helps in improving the quality of education and solving some of the challenges faced in the medication system. The Podcast relates to the article Public Education Under Criticism by Winfield and Clyde, where there were segregation and discrimination forcing leaders and parents to file petitions to courts. When new insights are given, things known in the past will change positively. Like in the past, there was discrimination hindering the social role of education as noted by John Dewey. Sighting people against discrimination improves the value of education. As an educator, the ideas will be important in going against any discrimination in the sector of education. As the Indian Administrations had problems, their challenges will be used in improving the legal actions in the system of educations. The readings show some sort of discrimination. According to Steven Mintz, in the article, Huck’s Raft: A history of American Childhood, “Discipline in the Chesapeake colonies was directed toward slaves, not white children’ (p. 42). Knowing the concept of discrimination still exists in American society based on culture, ethnicity and race.
