Chapter 1 Introduction
Justification for choosing the topic/issue. Why is it important and what is the relevance to practice and policy?

Chapter 2 – Justification for choosing the papers critiqued.
· Is it the impact on policy, being widely cited or are they the only texts? · It is recommended to choose texts no older than 10 years old. Older texts need to be justified. · The number of texts selected necessarily varies depending on the topic or issue. It is suggested that a minimum of five and a maximum of ten texts are selected. More or fewer must be justified but the assessment is looking for depth of knowledge, not just of the topic/issue chosen but also of the research process. |

Chapter 3 – Appraisal of texts. This must answer the following questions:
· Is the paper one of many from a research project or the full account? (not all papers will have full accounts. If there is no discussion of the methodology or methods for example, look to see if previous papers from the project have been published that have that information. It is common for one research project to spawn 2-6 papers). · Does the author/s clearly define the question and/or hypothesis? Is the research inductive or deductive? · Does the author provide an overview of the research area? Is it current? What are the issues they identify as important? What methodologies do they draw upon? · What are the ethical implications of the research? · Is the methodology chosen appropriate for the research question? Why/why not? · What was the sample? Is it large enough? Random or snowballed? Problems with internal or external validity? · Are the methods clearly described and appropriate? · How were the data analysed? Is it appropriate? · What are the key findings? Do they answer the research question? · Do the conclusions tie in with the findings? · What were the limits of the study? Does the author recognise these limitations? Where policy claims were made, did they deliver?

Chapter 4 – Discussion – Themes
· What have you learned from the texts? · Why are they important in understanding the topic/issue? · Was there anything surprising? · Do they form a consensus or are there disagreements between them? If so, what are they? · Do other authors agree with the findings or are the papers subject to criticism? If so from whom? · Bring in the wider literature here including grey lit. · Implications for practice
