Teachers are welcoming stricter mask guidance for students in B.C. schools, but the language of the updated advice isn’t quite as firm as some, including teachers and their union, had expected. B.C.’s provincial health officer outlined new school mask guidelines on Monday as part of a set of tougher new COVID-19 measures to address rising case numbers and the increase in variants of the virus.
The public health guidance supports optional masks for all students from Grade 4 to 12, but it is not of a requirement.
But Teri Mooring, president of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, says the change is confusing. She welcomes the announcement but says it should be an actual requirement, and that schools need better ventilation systems.

B.C. Premier John Horgan has no regrets about his choice of words, blaming young people for B.C.’s latest surge in COVID-19 cases. He says he’s happy he got their attention, even if they’re upset and angry.
On Monday, Horgan said people aged 20 to 39 are not paying enough attention to COVID-19 dangers. He also says young people are putting older adults in a challenging situation. Speaking on Tuesday, the premier stood by his words and did not offer an apology.
B.C. has seen a large increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the ages of 20 to 39. Young people are often the ones putting their health on the line to work in grocery stores, restaurants, and health care.
Horgan says this age group is in a dangerous place and he’s speaking out to make sure their parents and grandparents are kept safe. He says he wants to protect all British Columbians.
