Senior Portfolio for BS-ISS
My overall experience at the University of Houston Downtown (UHD) has been a challenging one. It took me seven years to get to where I am today and I would not change a thing. I have encountered many obstacles, but I can finally see the end. With just a few credits away from earning my degree, I know in the end my hard work will be all worth it.
As I sit here and reflect on my journey, I have realized that I should have continued my education many years ago. I was forty-two years old when I registered for classes at Lone Star Community College. The first day of class was overwhelming. I felt like I was out of place and too old to be there. I found out quickly that I needed to be self-sufficient while working sixty plus hours a week. Yes, professors guide their classes with a syllabus for the semester, but it is the student’s responsibility to do the work. Professors are there to teach you not to hold your hand. I started with my basics and electives in business and education and before I knew it I had earned my Associate of Arts (AA).
I was not planning on continuing my education after my associate’s degree, but after pushing my kids to continue their education they became my cheering squad along with my parents, and co-workers. Transferring from Lone Star Community College to the University of Houston was a huge step for me. Failing was/is my biggest fear.
My journey at UHD was not your typical college experience. With only a few credits away from earning my Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies I feel forever grateful for to UHD. For providing not only me, but many others the opportunity to attend classes around our hectic schedules.
I feel that the BA in Interdisciplinary Studies program has set a path for me to further my career and educational endeavors. This program has given me the opportunity to take classes that will make me a better critical thinker, team player, and work on my communication skills in front of an audience. I am currently taking Principles of Management and Organizational Behavior (MGT 3301) and enjoying this class. Even though this class is completely virtual it is giving me the tools I need to practice and solve real world office situations with simulation scenarios. This class is giving me the information I would need to work in upper management.
Overall, after taking classes at the University of Houston Downtown I am glad that I continued my education here to earn my Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies. This degree that I will have earned will open many doors and opportunities to further my education and career. And even though this pandemic brought the world to a halt, UHD never gave up on their students. Whether I go into the business field or do an alternative teaching certification I know I owe my success to what I have learned at UHD. I will forever be proud to be a UHD gator.
