Essay Subsections to Include Your essay needs to include the following standard
sections:
1. Introduction – Introduce the topic area that you chose (e.g. definitions, prevalence
rates). Briefly explain what you will cover in the essay. Please note that you should only
choose ONE type of crime from the list above for your essay.
2. Body – This will be made up of a number of paragraphs and since it is a long essay
you can use sub-titles (e.g. for each theory that you critically evaluate). In this section you
should critically evaluate the theories that have been used to explain the type of crime you
chose. Besides describing the theories you also need to critically evaluate them. For
example, you need to examine the strengths and limitations of those theories and provide
supporting empirical evidence.
3. Conclusion – You need to clearly determine which of the theories provides the most
comprehensive explanation (i.e. is the best at explaining that type of crime). You need to
explain why you think it is the most comprehensive. It could be that it is the most
comprehensive of the theories, but still has limitations and you can discuss those. You can
also make suggestions for future research to further develop the theories.
