It is crucial for someone to know his/her natural leadership orientation. It can help understand how people tend to make sense of things. Also, one subset of this meaning-making system is the way an individual sees and relates to others and circumstances. People commonly have a primary and a secondary orientation. Sometimes, some people may have more than one secondary orientation – this shapes and characterizes their needs and predilections, what rouses and moves them, and so on. On a relationship level, it is important to know your own leadership direction and discern the direction of others so that you can react to situations and engage with others in a way that exploits opportunities to engage and inspire others towards desired results.
For the leadership orientation assessment, my scores were Structural (13), Human Resources (20), Political (9), and Symbolic (19) (see picture below). It is evident that my highest score is Human Resources (20). The Human Resources leaders’ description, resonates with me. “A good leader is a facilitator and participative manager who supports and empowers others (Bolman and Deal, 2017).” I have been leading/managing for many years (church, home, and work) – definitely, I am a “people person.” I truly believe in the importance of coaching, participation, motivation, teamwork, and good interpersonal relationships. Since everyone is different, the interpretation could differ. I would not say the test is valid at 100%, but the accuracy percentage is way above intermediate. That being said, it is highly recommended to check one’sleadership style.
In conclusion, one’s leadership orientation specifies whether a person is a task-oriented leader or a people-oriented leader. You would be viewed as a task-oriented leader for those of you whose attention is on simply getting the work done. For myself, I am a people-oriented leader.
