Where do we go from here? Who will be our best friends and worst enemies in the coming decades? Will we finally achieve peace and prosperity that we all hoped for?
In 1945, after WWII, the United Nations (UN) was created with one central mission of maintaining international peace and security. They accomplish this by working to prevent conflicts, helping parties in conflict make peace, deploying peacekeepers, and creating the conditions to allow peace to hold and flourish (United Nations, n.d.). The UN employs preventative diplomacy and mediation, peacekeeping operations, peacebuilding, countering terrorism and disarmament to help maintain peace and security.
According to a Economist/YouGov poll, most Americans feel that the worst enemies to the United States are: China, Russia, North Korea and Iran (Frankovic, 2021).
A survey published in the New York Times showed that Americans believe that Australia, Canada, Britain and France to be our greatest allies; not necessarily in that because democrats and republicans believe differently (Katz & Quealy, 2017).
It would be nice to think that peace and prosperity would be finally achieved but I am hesitant because it seems one country is always mad at another one for some reason; whether it be the launching of ballistic missiles into the sea of Japan, the U.S. goods trade deficit with China or any other situational crisis, it seems that tensions run high between countries that interact or depend on something from the other. Can’t we all just get along? Time magazine (2015) concludes that World peace imposed by a dominant power is unlikely because global power is becoming increasingly diversified and contentious. It could be that worldwide peace will only come when the threat to humanity’s existence becomes an imminent threat to all (Time, 2015).
