PH44000 – Implicit Bias Activity Reflection Guide
During the next several modules, we will be discussing some of the root causes of health disparities in the US. In
preparation for this discussion, I want you to think about how implicit bias may affect health and healthcare.
Implicit bias is the bias that we experience and express that we are not consciously aware of.
For this activity, I would like you to go to the Project Implicit website and take at least two of the different
Implicit Association Tests (IATs) that are there. You may choose any two IATs to complete that you like. The
website explains IATs as the following:
The Implicit Association Test (IAT) measures attitudes and beliefs that people may be unwilling or
unable to report. The IAT may be especially interesting if it shows that you have an implicit attitude that
you did not know about. For example, you may believe that women and men should be equally
associated with science, but your automatic associations could show that you (like many others)
associate men with science more than you associate women with science.

Reflective Writing: After completing the IATs, please write a 200-400 word reflection on your experience. Some
questions you may want to consider are below. You do NOT need to respond to all these questions. They are
just provided as a starting point for your reflections.
– How did you feel about the process of taking the IATs and seeing your results?
– Were your results on the IATs consistent with what you thought they would be?
– What factors do you think may shape your implicit biases?
– What role do you think implicit biases may play in perpetuating discrimination?
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please do NOT share your IAT results in your reflective writing. I am asking you to the take
the tests to stimulate your thinking about this topic. I do not want to know your specific results, but rather how
the experience of taking it and seeing the results did/did not affect your views about bias and disparities in
healthcare and public health.
