multiple questions

Questions

1.) Watch a prominent TV show that portrays adult sexuality. What is shown about relationships between love/emotional closeness and sexual desire as perceived by women and men? Is this portrayal accurate? What is the relationship between love and sex and between sexual attraction and sex? Does this reflect any of the theories discussed in your textbook? What values and ideas are being conveyed? Is extra relational sex a media norm? A cultural norm? What messages are being conveyed about assumptions regarding monogamy?

2.)What Is Sexual Harassment?

Sexual harassment refers to two distinct types of behavior: (1) the abuse of power for sexual ends and (2) the creation of a hostile environment. In terms of abuse of power, sexual harassment consists of unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature as a condition of instruction or employment. Refusal to comply may result in reprisals. Only a person with power over another can commit the first kind of harassment. In a hostile environment, someone acts in sexual ways that interfere with a person’s performance at school or in the workplace. Such harassment is illegal. Sexual harassment includes two distinct types of illegal harassment: the abuse of power for sexual ends and the creation of a hostile environment. Sexual harassment may begin as early as middle childhood. In college, about one half of all students have experienced some form of sexual harassment (verbal or physical) since they had enrolled in college.

Myths About Rape

Our society has a number of myths about rape, which serve to encourage rather than discourage it. Belief in rape myths is part of a larger belief structure that includes gender-role stereotypes, sexual conservatism, acceptance of interpersonal violence, and the belief that men are different from women. Men are more likely than women to believe rape myths (Kalof & Wade, 1995). The following list of 12 common rape myths can clarify misunderstandings about rape:

Myth 1: Rape is a crime of passion.
Myth 2: Women want to be raped.
Myth 3: “But she wanted sex.”
Myth 4: Women ask for it.
Myth 5: She did not fight back or scream.
Myth 6: Women could avoid rape if they really wanted to by curtailing their activities.
Myth 7: Women cry rape for revenge.
Myth 8: Rapists are crazy or psychotic.
Myth 9: Most rapists are of a different race/ethnicity than their victims.
Myth 10: Men cannot control their sexual urges.
Myth 11: Rape is “no big deal.”
Myth 12: Men cannot be raped.
Myth 13: Women are raped only by strangers.

Journal: Write in 300-500 words about the following topic.

After watching some news and some television shows, including movies and anime. What are some portrayals of sexual harassment and rape myths that are perpetuated by social media, entertainment media, and news outlets?
What is the motivation of rapists on TV and in the movies?
What “types” of women get raped or sexually assaulted and harassed in movies and television?
Some research suggests that on TV and in the movies nontraditional women get raped more often than traditional women as a means of putting nontraditional women “in their place.”
How does what you saw compare to the research? How do gender stereotypes perpetuate rape and harassment culture?
In your experience or opinion, what are some ways society can address some of these issues around sexual assault and sexual battery, especially on college campuses and workplaces?

3.) Select three to four questions to discuss in your post. Each post must be 250-300 words for the post. Once you have completed your discussion, respond to two classmates with 30-40 works as a response to once of the points they addressed in the discussion.
1. If you could conduct a study on sexuality, what area would you choose and why? What methods of data collection would you use?
2. Is sex research valuable or necessary? What areas of research should be prohibited from being researched? What areas need more research?
3. Which type of method of research do you think yields the highest degree of honesty? What method would you feel most comfortable with?
4. Describe the elements of an informed consent and why it is important to include this for every research study.
5. Would you have volunteered for a study with Master’s & Johnson? Why or why not, explain your response.
6. How do you think modern day research helps us in today’s understanding of sexuality. What contemporary research study from the NHSLS, NSFG, YRBS, NSSHB research data impressed upon you that you did not know before this course?

4.) An important tenant of a broad comprehensive approach is that sexuality education should prepare young people for a healthy expression of their sexuality. Oftentimes, teens are found with many mixed messages regarding sexuality from peers, family, religion, media, and partners. As a matter of fact, many adolescents don’t know where to get proper education, and for over 35 years abstinence-only programming has been the focal point of sexuality education and policy in the United States until it was replaced.
In 2016, President Obama replaced abstinence-only programs with age-appropriate, evidence-based education that address life skills to help teens make responsible decisions that lead to safe and healthy lives. Many have argued that sexuality education should be the responsibility of parents and clergy and that schools should not be involved. However, parents and clergy have rebutted that they lack the proper information to disseminate to the kids and oftentimes cite lack of proper information and embarrassment or acknowledgment of teen sexuality. Sexuality education is a lifelong process and it requires a multifaceted approach, it is a team effort.

In your discussion address the following questions in a paragraph format:

Who or what taught you the most about sexuality when you were a child or teenager? What lessons did you learn and did those lessons prepare you to become sexually competent? What would have made your sexuality education more complete and ready for any sexual encounter? Who do you believe is responsible for the primary sexual education of teens? What should be included in a sexuality education program for teens at your local high school and why?

5.) Read the following discussion prompts and select one topic to discuss in Module 4 Discussion.
Topic # 1: Review the list of physical and psychological causes of sexual dysfunction. Which of the sexual dysfunctions do you think would be more difficult to deal with. Why? Explain your rationale. Are there any treatments that go against your cultural, ethical, or religious beliefs?
Topic # 2:  Based on the overview of approaches to treating sexual problems provided in the text, discuss the pros and cons of each. Which, if any, would be most acceptable to you and which one would not. Why? Explain your rationale. Are there any treatments that go against your cultural, ethical, or religious beliefs?
For full credit respond to at least one classmate.

Discussion Directions

a. Discuss your results in this discussion forum. You will be posting two posts: the first is your “original post.” Original posts are discussion posts you submit with your original contribution to the discussion; the second is your “reply post.” Reply posts are posts you submit responding to other students’ contributions to the discussion.
b. Your discussion should be in narrative format, not in a list and it should be a discussion, not simple yes, no, or sometimes answers. It must be 250-300 words or more.
c. Your ORIGINAL POST should include the information listed below. You may want to consider creating your discussion in Microsoft Word, spell checking it, checking the grammar, and when it’s ready, copying the contents over into this discussion. When you are ready to post your work, submit it as a reply to your instructor’s opening thread message (attachments are not allowed in the discussions in this course).
d. Click on “Reply” to your instructor’s message in this forum and paste your reply into the message window (use Control+V to paste) or type it directly in the discussion window that appears when you click on reply to the instructor’s thread, but be sure to use the Blackboard spellcheck feature (it’s the last item in the second line of the features and it says ABC). Be sure to edit your work carefully and check the grammar, punctuation and capitalization since you will be graded based on those elements.
e. Be careful how you type and present your work. This is not an instant or text message. It’s a college-level writing assignment you are submitting for a grade. You will be graded on the quantity and quality of your work and on the inclusion of all the required information as well as your demonstrated level of critical thinking and analysis. The required information is contained below:
