Order Psychoanalytic of Frankenstein Assignment
Literacy analysis when done from a psychoanalytic perspective of criticism, the reader of
must overlook the externalities and look at the work itself. One may decide to interpret
Frankenstein and the monster that he creates as embodying Sigmund Feud’s theory of id and ego
to explain the personality characteristics (Gale). This theory by Feud is solely base on the idea
that the personality trait can be divided into three different parts that are the id, ego, and the
superego. The id is simply the desire of a person or what a person wants. The superego houses a
person feeling of guilt and lastly, the ego brings in a balance between the id and the superego
which is the desire and the guilt. The ego is a representation of reality. From Feud theory, one
could understand what drove Frankenstein in creating life and that is the id. Frankenstein
believed that by creating a life he can discover the secrets of life and death create a new species
and learn how to renew life. Frankenstein is motivated to attempt creating life by his ambition.
Frankenstein wanted to achieve something great, be successful and famous around the globe,

regardless of the cost with which this ambition comes.
Frankenstein Victor’s id or desires are well identifiable at the beginning of the novel
where Frankenstein says that his life might have been passed in ease and luxury, but I preferred
glory to every enticement that wealth placed in my path. (Shelley) This statement explains the
motivation for his voyage of exploration and the justification that he (Frankenstein Victor) needs
to be successful. Frankenstein Victor’s motivation for more and more exploration is fame and the
respect he thinks he will get for making that discovery but not the benefit each person will get
from the discovery. Frankenstein continues and says, “For when I would account to myself for
the birth of that passion, which afterward ruled my destiny, I find it arise, like a mountain river,
from ignoble and almost forgotten sources; but swelling as it proceeded, it became the torrent
which, in its course, has swept away all my hopes and joys.” (Shelley) Frankenstein speaks these
words while expressing his origin of the obsession of artificially creating life. Frankenstein
Victor creates the monster out of his desires and ambition to become great and famous.
However, Frankenstein victor does not put into consideration the repercussions that would come
with him creating a monster.

The id can be equated to the inner child and when the id is superior
as is the case with Frankenstein Victor that he has no conscious sense when he is satisfying the id
that is the inner child by creating life. Frankenstein Victor lacks self-awareness and moral
responsibility and this is evident as he explains his ambition as an external force beyond his
control by comparing it to a raging river sweeping away everything in its path. Though his
ambition might have been a very powerful desire still this ambition is an internal feeling that he
could have controlled, instead of allowing the feeling to direct him and his actions without
considering the repercussions of his actions.
“The world was to me a secret which I desired to divine.” This statement by Frankenstein
Victor shows that science was so appealing to him and he is driven by the desire to invent or
unearth secrets. In addition, Frankenstein is a secretive character since he works on the creation
of life and keeps this as a secret to himself until he is on his deathbed it is when he revealed the
secret. Frankenstein Victor was obsessed with the secrets of the world and David Colling’s
critical article, “The Monster and the Maternal Thing.” Writes that,..”As a young scholar, Victor
studies neither the structure of languages, nor the code of governments, nor the politics of
various states, all subjects associated with the symbolic order but rather the physical secrets of
the world.” The secrets of the world were so much rooted in the heart of Frankenstein Victor
