Particularly, in light of your understanding of the research process gained in this class, discuss how you might have approached the assignment differently. Would applying the research process have led to a different product? In what way?

In my week 2 critique essay I broke down some of the elements of mental training regarding Sports Psychology. I chose this article as it caught my attention due to my current job and mental training skills play a huge part in an athlete’s regime. I broke down the different types of mental abilities to include foundation, performance, personal development, and team skills.

When I look back at what I produced in week 2, I think I used my knowledge of the Sport Psychology field and my previous studies and tried to describe what the article was “trying” to say instead of breaking down the article. I tend to sometimes get carried away when there is something I am passionate about like sports psychology. If I could apply the research process a different way today, I would produce a more broken-down synopsis of the article instead of tying my own education into it. I would still use my interpretation of what the author was trying to say but in a more academic matter and not a freelance product.

Research on mental practice, trends, and theory can improve sports performance and today’s generation’s focus is on psychological training exercises that strengthen the mental skills that will help athletic performance on the path to excellence. The historical development of mental skills in sports originated in the Soviet Union and was the first country to systematically engage in mental skills training with athletes and coaches in the 1950s. Mental Skills Training became a great focus for research practice in North American sports psychology in the 1980s. Several events are signs of this professionalism in which sports psychology has shifted from an academic research discipline to an interdisciplinary professional service provider for consumers. These events include the establishment of guidelines and a registry for the provision of sport psychology services by the U.S. Olympic Committee in 1983, the first systematic provision of sport psychology services to the U.S. Olympic Team in 1984, the hiring of a full-time sport psychologist by the USOC, the formation of the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology (AAASP) in 1985, and the formation of a division of Exercise and Sport Psychology within the American Psychological Association. What knowledge we have achieved in the last 25 years on important mental abilities for athletes and coaches? The goal of mental education is to support sport participants in the development of intellectual skills to achieve successful performance and personal well-being. Therefore, it seems important to recognize important mental skills related to achievements and personal advantages. It serves to emphasize that many types of mental abilities are very
3important to be successful, and well-being in athletes and coaches, including foundation, performance, personal development, and team skills. Foundation skills are personal resources that are the basic background skills required to achieve success in sport. Achievement drive is the urgent, compelling effort and stamina to overcome obstacles and fulfill something worthwhile or important. Performance skills are mental abilities to carry out skills in sports performance. Highly skilled athletes have professional knowledge about tactics and strategies including outstanding explanations and recognition of game models, faster recognition and detection, visual search behaviors are more efficient and adequate, and forecast events with their sports. Personal development skills are the mental skills that represent significant markers about personal development and enables high psychological activity in the clarity of self-timing, the feeling of happiness, and feeling with others. And finally, team skills are the collective features of the team as an instrument for an effective and successful team environment in the whole group. The team is confident and has a collective resource or the ability of the group to achieve success for the group. The convinced team is a better forecast factor for the team success compared to synthesizing the individual confidence levels for all team members. These four mental skills abilities are why I think this article is useful and can contribute to the deeper understanding of the topic discussed. A third layer of the mental training process is strategy. I believe after reviewing this article, strategies affect my daily job and future profession more than anything. These are the organizational plans of action that operationalize how the intervention specifically works, typically using sequential steps in multiple phases. The assessment strategy is an important part of this class of this mental training process, as consultants like myself decide how and when to assess the mental skills training needs of athletes. The overall assessment strategy then leads to
4the use of specific assessment techniques such as observation, interviews, questionnaires, and psychological measures. In summary, the mental training process consists of classes that open upas part of a comprehensive mental training approach. Mental Skills Training begins with philosophical foundations accepted and evaluated by consultants and then opens up in the concept of intervention with adequate strategies and techniques. There are many ways to conceptualize the multilayer mental training process but what is important is that it involves a comprehensive process as opposed to starting at the bottom and simply applying mental training techniques without an overall framework to guide.
