The Internet of Things IoT is now part of mobile technology. Examiners are now required to know more than just smart phones. Discuss at least one IoT technology in detail and explain the challenges that are associated with the technology. 2. What effect will IoT devices have on forensics investigations? Please provide specific examples to justify your answer. – – – – – – – – – – – – student number 1 discussion : CHRIS SUSALLA Smart refrigerators are a modern convenience with all the bells and whistles. Smart refrigerators come with a big touch screen display right on the front of the door. This touch screen is voice activated and can make you a shopping list just by you telling it what you want. It also connects to the internet which allows you to pull up recipes or even how to videos from YouTube to be displayed right on the screen. You can also pull up Netflix and watch a movie while you cook. If you are shopping you can look into your refrigerator right from your phone to see what is in there. With all these conveniences there is also a level of danger involved. Smart refrigerators are connected to the internet which means that they can be hacked. If a new technology can be hacked you can be sure someone will start figuring how to hack it. The software on these refrigerators is supported with security updates but there is no guarantee how long they will continue to update them. This is causing a lot of concern in the security community because without regular security updates the software will become a weak spot on your network. If a criminal can gain access to your network through your Smart refrigerator then they have access to any other device on your network. Smart refrigerators can provide forensic investigators with some evidence. Some smart refrigerators have motion sensor cameras that could catch an image of an intruder or a resident giving them proof of their whereabouts. You also have to log into these refrigerators when you want to view your camera or shopping list remotely. This leaves a log on the system and can prove or disprove someone’s alibi. Bhartiya S. With IoT different devices and systems are interconnected. One of the most commonly used IoT devices/systems is WiFi routers and WiFi Network. These operate by using a router to provide inter access to any device that connects to it. Being able to analyze these devices is becoming increasingly important as criminals will use their own WiFi along with public WiFi to commit crimes. One of the challenges is to gain access to the router. This poses a challenge as most routers are encrypted. Another challenge is that routers do not contain a lot of RAM so analysis must be done as soon as possible (Bragg p.182). Finally documenting all evidence is tough because there is an extreme amount of data such as IP address connected devices and all the packets sent over the router. IoT devices will pose challenges as well provide advantages to investigators. For example investigators may now be able to get evidence for a crime even if they do not have a suspect in custody or have their devices. If a crime is committed on a public network and investigtors knew they were there they can perform analysis on that network. A major issue with IoT is that there are an extreme amount of devices nowadays and this means different hardware and software is needed for each device that is being analyzed. This also means that examiners must know how to use many different types of software to be effective at their jobs. References: Bigueur M. (2017 December 16). Wireless forensics.
