Processes of classification and assessment

They are important to the ly running of a facility and failure to properly classify an inmate could have negative impacts on security. For instance if an inmate who has committed escapes in the past is housed in a minimum security facility the inmates chances of escape would probably be much higher than if properly classified in a maximum security prison. The same can be said for fights and victimization of inmates. Classifying an offender with behavioral issues and a history of fighting in a cell where the inmates are not prone to violence can lead to the non-violent inmates being victimized. For this discussion imagine you are a relatively new correctional officer. Although you have only worked as an officer for a little over one year you have taken the time to learn as much as possible because you really like the work you are performing. You have had the opportunity to take several training classes on various subjects. The last class you attended dealt with topic of classification of inmates where you learned there have been many lawsuits filed against correctional facilities due to mistakes and errors when classifying and assessing inmates. You found this class to be interesting and informative. Shortly after taking the class you are assigned to work in the cell known as E 3b. You are not thrilled because this is your last night before you go on vacation for two weeks. E 3b houses offenders who are known for not obeying the prison rules and giving officers a hard time. It is not uncommon for officers assigned here to have to use force against belligerent inmates who threaten staff. You are about half an hour from getting off the shift and are looking forward to your vacation. A new inmate is escorted into your area to be housed. As usual you greet the inmate and engage him in conversation as you are showing him to his bunk area. As you are talking with the new inmate you are wondering how he was assigned to E 3b. He says he was convicted of identification fraud and does not have a violent history. The more you talk to him the more you think classification made a mistake when they assigned him to E 3b. You really do not want to call the classification officer because he is difficult to deal with. You have had to call him once or twice for such things as obtaining simple inmate information and he has given you a hard time about having to help you.
