Assignment Task – Case Study Report

Consider the case study by Kiisel available at Project Smart (2011) “What a Heart

Surgeon Could Learn from a Project Manager”. You are a Project Manager with some

years’ experience within a Project Management role. A friend who works in a hospital

has seen this case study, liaised with the Head of Cardiology and they have requested

that you prepare a report for the surgical team on project management techniques

considering how and why these could be beneficial for them to adopt.

You have been asked to prepare a report which considers:

Question 1

a) What project management is and how the project management process aligns

planning and implementing a cardiac surgical procedure including the relevance

of determining and agreeing scope, deliverables and constraints.

(15 marks)

(LOs 1)

b) The relevance of stakeholder analysis. This should consider the needs and

interests of the cardiac surgical team from understanding project management

principles. You should include identification of those who can participate in the

planning of surgery and its delivery to optimise its success. Evaluate the

importance of stakeholder analysis to the likely success of surgery.

(15 marks)

(LOs 2, 6)

c) A critical analysis of the relevance and applicability to surgery of:

• Planning.

• Project lifecycles and use of methodologies.

• Building and leading teams.

• Tools and techniques which the cardiac surgical team may find useful to

plan and monitor project implementation in a surgical setting.

(30 marks)

(LOs 2, 3, 5, 6)

d) A draft project plan which highlights the work breakdown structure and resource

breakdown structure for a typical cardiac surgical procedure along with how a draft

budget would be developed.

(15 marks)

(LOs 1, 6)

Question 2

Reflect on your learning from the PMT module. From the perspective of a future project

manager, what do you perceive to be the key personal skills and competencies of a

project manager? What might be the key challenges with regards to project

management practices and what skills and competencies might you need to effectively

manage these?

Once you have identified your range of skills and competencies, undertake an objective

self-assessment and determine areas for future personal development incorporating

these into a personal development plan to be submitted as an appendix to the

assignment.

(25 marks)

Formative Feedback

You have the opportunity to submit an outline of your assignment showing the key

points which you intend to cover to receive formative feedback. This should be no

longer than 2 pages.

The feedback is designed to help you develop areas of your work and it helps you

develop your skills as an independent learner.

Your work must be submitted to your tutor by email at least two weeks before the

submission deadline. This is to allow time for you to reflect on the feedback and draft

your final submission.

Formative feedback will not be given to work submitted after the above date.

Guidelines:

You MUST underpin your analysis and evaluation of the key issues with appropriate and

wide ranging academic research and ensure this is referenced using the AU Harvard

system.

The My Study Skills Area on iLearn contains useful resources relating to referencing.

You must use the AU Harvard Referencing method in your assignment.

Additional notes:

Students are required to indicate the exact word count on the title page of the
assessment.

The word count excludes the title page, tables, figures, diagrams, footnotes,
reference list and appendices. Where assessment questions have been reprinted
from the assessment brief these will also be excluded from the word count. ALL other
printed words ARE included in the word count See ‘Word Count Policy’ on the

Assessment Criteria: Level 7 (Learning objectives covered – all)
