Religion and religious fundamentalism

Write an overview of the following issues, selecting and outlining what you believe are the majors causes of these problems and possible solutions for the future. Make sure to address all four areas.

Chapter 9 dives into some of the main challenges in crossing social and cultural b s:

–It discusses religion and religious fundamentalism, particularly Islam and Islamic fundamentalism, as a critical issue of identity.

–It defines ethnic conflict as another important challenge and illustrates this concept with examples of ethnic cleansing and genocide.

–It outlines the idea of the failed state. It describes how the failed state is determined by the Fund for Peace through their Fragile State Index, and the implications that failed states have for identity.

–It outlines some of the ways that groups are overcoming these challenges through transitional justice efforts, such as truth and reconciliation commissions.

The paper has a minimum length of 700 words with at least two outside sources to supplement the text material.

The paper should have a title at the beginning and a citations section at the end which uses common academic citation styles.  The paper should not begin with a repetition of the question or have your name, my name, the course name, date, etc., those do not count toward the word total nor does the citation page.  The paper should begin with a title to your work and then the material; which should ideally include an opening statement of your thesis, a structured and organized body of work, and a conclusion.  There is a rubric attached to each paper assignment that indicates the methodology utilized for the grading score.  Wikipedia and various encyclopedias are not considered proper sources.  The paper should focus on an analysis of the question but it is also fine to put your own opinions and viewpoints into the paper.  I will not determine your grade based upon any opinions.

Tips for writing papers:

Make sure to read the question in it’s entirety and then focus on what is being asking, which is often highlighted.

The textbook can be a source but it is not counted in the requirement to have two outside sources.  Outside sources are a key part of your ability to learn more information in to provide engaging responses to the question.  We use sources (easily gained from Google searches) to help us garner new ideas and information.

Don’t start your paper by writing such things as: “Chapter 5 states”, or “Websters defines … as”, or “I really learned a lot in Chapter 2,” etc.

Don’t write your name, my name, the date, the question, the course, etc. at the beginning. Instead have a title and an opening thesis paragraph.

Always have a title for your work (think about newspapers or online news-their is ALWAYS a title.  Sometimes, it’s best to wait until you done writing to determine your title.

The opening paragraph is the most important part of your paper.  If the reader isn’t interested in the first paragraph, they are likely to lose interest.

The opening paragraph should be a concise thesis statement of what your paper will be about.  It might be best to write all your work and then come back and write or rewrite the opening.

Write in the third person.  Professional paper and your work in the public or private sector after you graduate will require you to write in the third person.

First person is “I really liked the information on globalization.”

Third person is “The information on globalization identified several key points which should be explored.”

First person uses: I, me, mine, etc.; so eliminate that style.
