Introduction

Your Midterm examination will be composed of 2 synthesis essays. You will have several days to write

and submit your examination essays. Please send your examination essays through Safe Assign on

Blackboard. It is your responsibility to ensure that I receive a good copy of your essays by the due date.

Be sure to put the class number (RST 1330) and your full name on your essays. Your attached files

should be Word files (.doc) or (.docx). Late assessments will be penalized 10% of the possible points per

day. Please retain a copy of your submissions. I will post grades and an assessment commentary on

Blackboard. You are welcome to discuss my evaluation of your work directly with me via e-mail.

Please Note:

Under assignments I have set up a Midterm Exam first draft originality check option. You can submit the

first draft of your Midterm Exam twice and receive originality reports. If uncited sources appear in this

report, you can fix them yourself or go to the Writing Center for help. I will not read over this draft; it is

your responsibility to check and correct it. There will not be revision opportunities for the actual Midterm

Exam, so please exercise great care before you submit it.

Midterm Instructions:

A synthesis essay requires you to bring together various sources such as the textbook, discussion boards,

course articles, the Bible, and other sources to answer questions. Your essays require analysis and

historical facts. Do not just go to an internet site and regurgitate information. The prompts are based on

major discussions from the first half of the course. Because it is understood that you will use the

textbook, material from the textbook does not need to be cited. Paraphrase material from the textbook.

The essays require analysis, so do not just paraphrase whole passages from the textbook. If you use

information from the course links or articles please cite your sources. These links may provide you with

specific examples to illustrate major ideas from the textbook. If you use information from the discussion

boards please cite the sources provided by the poster unless they cite the textbook. The discussion boards

will be open during the week the exam is posted.

Each essay must be written in formal, standard English. Please proofread your essays before submitting

them to Safe Assign. In a discussion board, language can be more informal because participants are

formulating their thoughts. The midterm essays require careful, planned out responses. Please be careful

to cite any outside sources to avoid plagiarism. Cite web-based sources by inserting live links in your

essays. Each essay should be written in five paragraphs with an introduction, three main body

paragraphs, and a conclusion. Illustrate general statements with specific historical examples. Each essay

must range from 700 to 750 words in length. Please do not exceed the world limit. SUBMIT BOTH

ESSAYS IN ONE DOCUMENT TO SAFEASSIGN. The due date is on the syllabus.

Essay One:

Choose ONE of the following early Christian leaders and thinkers Saint Augustine or Saint Jerome.

Choose what you consider to be the three most important accomplishments of the saint are. In your essay

argue which of the three accomplishments is most important and explain the reasons for your choice.

There is no one correct answer for this question.

Essay Two:

Explain the contributions monks made to the growth of Christianity in the first few hundred years.

Choose the three most important contributions of monasticism and argue which contribution is the most

important of the three and explain the reasons for your choice. There is no one correct answer for this

question.
