Selection of a Survey Research Design
1. A brief description of the research problem and purpose you selected for your Research Proposal.
2. Explain which survey research design is most appropriate for addressing your problem and research question(s).
3. Justify your choice of design by explaining why it is most appropriate compared to other designs.
Main Discussion: According to Dirani, Abadi, Alizadeh, Barhate, Garza, Gunasekara, Ibrahim, and Majzun (2020), in the time of COVID-19, organizations are experiences unimaginable disruptions and leaders to need to adopt innovative ways to motivate the employee. The purpose of the study is to explore the issues that employees are experiencing as they return to a centralized office instead of continuing with telework during the COVID19 pandemic, especially employees who work in admissions, offices in colleges, universities, or other institutions while remaining productive. Diab-Bahman and Al-Enzi (2020) found that employees who experience old working conditions (OWC) working on site and compared their current working conditions (CWC) of remote working in the COVID-19 pandemic changed their perceptive on their conventional work expectations. The study indicated that employees viewed their OWC needs to be reviewed and for the employer to allow a more permanent CWC of working remote that allowed for more flexible, enjoyable working conditions. As the employees are now being forced to return to on site workplace, this study will examine how their job attitudes, organizational commitment and the employee transition will be affected.
Selected Survey Research Design
The survey research design that would be most appropriate for addressing the research problem above is exploratory research. This survey research design emphasizes the discovery of insights and ideas rather than the collection of statistically accurate data (Apuke, 2017). For the research problem above, this research design will take the form of an online survey, which will have open-ended questions. It will focus on the collection of qualitative data in to get quality information, which will give insight into the feelings and perceptions of the employees on working remotely versus working in a centralized location.
Justification of the Selected Design
As aforementioned, the exploratory research design is effective in the discovery of insights instead of statistically accurate data. Consequently, exploratory research is inexpensive, highly interactive and provides open-ended questions in nature. Additionally, this design focuses on the collection of qualitative data rather than quantitative data. In the research study, getting qualitative data will be ideal since the responses will either concisely affirm or reject the hypotheses. Sreejesh, Mohapatra, and Anusree (2014) states that the alternatives to the exploratory research design are descriptive research and causal research, which both alternatives aim to collect quantitative data that is not ideal for solving the research problem of the study in focus. The former has a structured design and the collected data can be statistically inferred on a specified population. The latter tries to use experimentation to evaluate whether a given relationship is causal or not (Sreejesh et al., 2014). Both the descriptive and causal models are ideal for getting quantitative data and grouping the responses of the participants to see if there are any patterns that emerge. The research problem in this case is not suited for such a research design because it only aims to see if the participants are better suited for remote work or on sit working.
