Coaching Model Analysis
Instructors, leaders, and coaches play a central part in activity or sports development, including the lives of individuals and teams under instruction. Good coaches ascertain that people in their teams are exposed to positive activities and experiences, contributing directly to achieving their potential. In other words, coaches are required to practice and demonstrate increased competence, integrity, and honesty (UK Coaching Team, 2018). The requirement for sports coaches to comprehend and implement personal roles is important to sports activities because it increases and promotes enjoyment and fun during participation. However, one significant aspect that coaches must consider involves their model of choice for the coaching practice. The proposed model presents various levels that require keen implementation for positive results.
To begin with, I consider an effective coaching practice one that contemplates various principles, which directly affect individuals and teams. For example, the proposed model presents significant phases that must be followed for better and desirable outcomes. I find the model effective and practical based on certain aspects, including the preparation, regulation, goal-setting, and strategic planning phases. These phases are relevant in my coaching practice because they make up the major activities of coaching activity. For example, the goal-setting phase is important since it primarily contributes to establishing achievable objectives that a basketball team can achieve. Furthermore, applying the proposed model to my coaching practice in basketball requires evaluating certain phases that might bring about practical and desirable results. As an illustration, setting priorities based on the set program is important because they present the entire coaching process.
Secondly, significant coaching practices focus on the individuals before pooling them into one team. Since individual participation plays a critical role in coaching practice, a coaching model must incorporate certain individual elements. For example, in basketball coaching practice, a coach must consider height, agility, and speed when considering players for training and competitive games (Cassidy et al., 2015). For this reason, models that lack this consideration cannot be effective in coaching practice. Individual performance is a key factor in coaching practice, and phases that explore this part are crucial. For instance, the proposed model presents a recruitment part during the initiation phase that focuses on a situational review. The situational review provides significant information concerning the player along with their performance history.
Another key factor in coaching practice involves decision-making. Coaches reach a certain time where they must make decisions regarding the coaching program and their players’ performance. For this reason, any coaching model deemed effective and practical comprises the decision point element. The proposed coaching practice model presents significant aspects of the decision point, including organism readiness, athlete-current status, environmental circumstances, performance model, and pre-determined schedule.
Nonetheless, the coaching practice model presented requires editing in certain areas that do not align with my coaching procedures. The area that I intend to alter involves the termination phase that comes after the initiation phase. Most coaches terminate their coaching practice procedures if they are not satisfied with the environment or regulations that affect their coaching plans.
Critical Analysis of Model Utility
Sports coaching is largely considered a leadership practice contributing to a boosted performance by teams or individuals in highly competitive sports activities. It requires significant skills and knowledge to ensure teams and individuals understand what it takes to achieve set results and outcomes. However, many coaches usually utilize notable frameworks when coaching different teams based on performance requirements. Coaching models guide sports coaching experts and professionals who seek to apply certain knowledge to propel a particular team to glory (Lyle & Cushion, 2016). For this reason, understanding the utility and effectiveness of a proposed coaching model is important because it assists coaches with vital information required in directing and guiding teams during competitive sports activities.
The proposed coaching model comprises various sections and phases that professional coaches must follow to reap positive outcomes. To begin with, the initiation phase, which comprises different activities, including recruitment and situational analysis. Secondly, the model also entails a termination section, which involves excluding certain aspects when there is no agreement between involved parties. Thirdly, the model consists of the goal setting and strategic planning phases, which are important in directing the coaching exercise and the coach’s expectations. Furthermore, the coaching framework also considers important stages, including the preparation, regulation, and competition phases. The competition phase largely involves the strategies used, the performance expectations, and feedback. The model also presents an evaluation platform that allows coaches to review every step of the exercise and ensuring that athletes adapt to the training program effectively.
Many sports require specific training approaches and exercises, particularly in terms of performance and fitness training. Sports specificity is important because certain training models may not work in other sports activities and, for this reason, coaching models must focus on specificity for beneficial outcomes (Lyle & Cushion, 2016). The proposed model focuses on different levels and phases that contribute to enhanced individual and team performance. In terms of specificity, the coaching model can be used in high-intensity sporting activities, such as American Football, soccer, and basketball. However, in this critical analysis, the model will be implemented in a basketball coaching practice. The coaching framework can be utilized specifically for basketball training because it considers significant phases and activities that affect the coaching process in basketball. For example, the initiation phase comprises initial expectations, performance history, and situational review, which relates to basketball training because many coaches prefer evaluating players’ past performances and setting up expectations. Additionally, setting goals, planning strategically, and preparing for the training program presents important phases that basketball coaches can utilize to get better results and address planning issues.
Systematic Coaching Behaviors
Coaching actions are primarily associated with significant differences because some procedures are considered more systematic than other coaching processes. As an illustration, coaching models that focus on the performer and the environment contribute to the exploration of goals scalability, predictability, contingency, and intensity, which lead to a systematic coaching action (Smith & Smoll, 2007). The proposed model presents a platform that supports systematic coaching practices based on various phases. One significant element that displays the systematic capability of the mentioned coaching model involves its comprehensive evaluation and consideration of details. The model explores specific details, such as reviewing situations, setting goals, strategic planning, termination, and preparation. Additionally, the coaching framework also presents instrumental coaching activities by ensuring a plan, regulation, and establishing of goals. In basketball coaching, planning notable activities and exercises is important because it provides effective opportunities for enhanced training. However, the activities and exercises used in basketball training must be regulated to avoid overdoing. Basketball athletes and coaches must set goals that act as core factors to reach expected performance levels.
Adapting the Model
Coaching frameworks require constant adapting to ensure they align with the changing needs of coaches and players. The more practice evidence is availed, the more the proposed coaching model must be adapted. For example, the proposed model can be adapted by ensuring a competition unit that caters to various issues after competitive events. Based on expectations by coaches, performance reviews can help with the adaptation process. As an illustration, in basketball coaching, assessing information before and after competitive games is crucial because it guides the coaches in adapting the model and ensuring relevant aspects of the process are considered. In this sense, model adaptation in coaching requires significant information based on observed aspects.
Edited Version of the Model
Transforming the termination phase because it does not align with individual coaching practice is essential. Instead of using the model with the termination phase, the edited and upgraded coaching model can utilize an alternative strategy that rectifies or considers factors that limit effective coaching and satisfaction. The alternative strategy phase will be complemented by an emergent strategy phase that provides options for the coaching process.
