Social identities essay

This assignment requires you write a short (2-3 page double spaced informal) paper documenting your various social identities (e.g. race/ethnicity age sex gender identity sexual orientation religion education socioeconomic status (SES)/social class language nationality disability etc.). You should devote a section of the paper to exploring your ethnic and/or cultural heritage as well as how your background is reflected in your behavior expectations and values resulting from your family (values and behaviors from now and when you were growing up) nationality ethnicity religion language gender geographic region socioeconomic status [SES] education and political orientation. You can choose other identities to discuss in your paper based on your level of comfort and space. In the paper you should also reflect on what you discovered about yourself your various forms of privilege /disadvantage and your relationships with others that may be different from you. You can also feel free to reflect on experiences that may make you different from others whom you go to school with and/or may work with in the future. This includes the type of family structure you had the value emphasized by your parents your SES level the type of leisure activities you participated in the racioethnic diversity or homogeneity of your neighborhood and your specific experiences with race gender nationality or some other intergroup situation. Think about the effect these events and experiences have had on how you view the world. Submit your paper through Canvas by the due date. Note that your discussion of privilege should be based on its definition (i.e. unearned advantage derived from one’s group membership). This would come from being a majority group member of whatever identities you choose to discuss (i.e. for gender the majority group is men for race the majority group is White people for sexual orientation the majority group is heterosexual people etc.). Also note that the “majority group” in this sense is defined in terms of access to power which in most cases is associated with being the numeric majority (e.g. [in the U.S.] White people heterosexual people etc.) but in some cases is just based on access to power (e.g. gender since men and women are generally equal in numbers). Group-identity based privilege does not refer to being financially well off unless you are specifically discussing the privilege associated with being from a higher socio-economic status.
