Goals and Objectives

Goals
A target problem needs to be identified.
A goal is then set to work on changing a behavior.
The goal needs to be stated in broader terms.
For example:
Increase use of positive social skills during interactions with others
Identify and explore symptoms and feelings associated with depression
Secure a new job that uses my skills and training
Sustain from the use of alcohol and other substances

An Objective
Objectives are based on the goals developed.
Objectives are steps in the process of achieving the goals.
At least two objectives should be used for each goal.
The objectives must be measurable.
Measurable objectives allow a person to track the progress they make toward their goals.
Example:
Carlos will attend 2 welding classes to earn his Certification renewal certificate to find work as a welder within 2 months.

Criteria in developing Objectives
Objectives need to have a date for completion.
They involve small steps that lead to goal achievement.
The accomplishments of each objective end with goal attainment.
Objectives may need changed or altered if they are too difficult or unattainable.
The objectives should be assessed regularly.
Objectives should be changed or removed once they are met.
When the person achieves the objectives and meets their goals the goal should be terminated and new ones developed.

GOAL # 3 Increase Positive Social Skills Interactions with Others

ACHIEVED NEW X CONTINUED DISCONTINUED DEFERRED

Objectives (Met by 4/10/2021)

Sarah will use Positive social skills & communication skills with others such as but not limited to
(sharing, asking permission, taking turns) during interactions in 5 out of 6 interactions. Current level=1 of 6 interactions

Sarah will learn how to play with others in a group setting in 4 out of 5 group interactions, Current level=1 of 5 group interactions

Sarah will eliminate physical and verbal aggression toward others, Current level=5-7 times per week.

Review of Goal and Objective Example

The goal should be broad and address the problem decided on based on the behavioral change desired.

The goal should be identified as new, continued, deferred, achieved, or discontinued.

The objectives need to have a date that signifies when the objectives should be met. If the time needs to be extended to meet these objectives the date on the updated treatment plan will reflect the continuation of this objective.

Review of Goal and Objective Example Continued
The objectives need to have the current level met by the person. A tracking log should be kept displaying the progress toward meeting the goal.

Updates to the goals and objectives allow the person to track progress, make changes, record updates, and review the current needs.
