My notes: I believe that in the past and to a certain degree still today, the majority of qataris had the consensus perspective thinking that society is based on a structure and if there is something wrong there must be a fault in the structure something must have been not in place and so that would be the reason for any particular failure. However I do believe that there is an increasing number of the people who believe in the conflict perspective and I somewhat agree with this perspective in to improve, one must experience problems first in to become better in the future. Polygamy was once very popular in history and as the book says it was more popular than monogamy historically and although at the present polygamy has declined tremendously it is still practiced in my home country, Qatar. In fact both my grandparents had more than one wife. My paternal grandfather was married to 3 and divorced 1 but remained married to 2. On the other hand my maternal grandfather married 2 but was not able to practice polygamy and divorced 1 and so he continued practicing monogamy later on. However none of my uncles from neither maternal or paternal sides have married more than 1 and neither were my aunts married to men who had other wives. I am also married and I myself am the only wife to my husband and so are all my friends that I know are the only wife to their husbands. So I believe that polygamy although is still present, legal, and religiously accepted, it is still declining as each generation passes. I believe that it is partly due to the decline in babies born around the world as compared with historical data. Nowadays it is not very important to conceive as much as possible and raise as many children. Instead people focus on raising fewer kids and marrying fewer women because the quality of the relationship is better than the quantity. So now people tend to focus on less to achieve more emotional connection whether it was the number of wives or the number of children they have. Another reason might be that there has been many developments in healthcare and education and so people learn about conception and contraception, no fertility and infertility. So men who used to marry other women because of problems with their first wife not being able to get pregnant has decreased as fertility issues are sometimes solvable in the current present and it is not really as shameful of a topic than it used to be. Most families in Qatar live in a nuclear family however almost all families have strong connections with the extended family. For example I am very close to my mothers cousins and aunts and uncles they are like my aunts and uncles and people in Qatar often visit their grandparents weekly if not more than once a week and have family gatherings at least twice in a week where the extended family and the family unites. I myself am living in a penthouse at my in-laws house with my husband and this is considered normal especially in the first years of marriage and until the couple can build another permanent house for them so I live in an extended household. About intermarriage my grandmother is Syrian and my grandfather is Qatari. Please include info about intermarriage in Qatar. Intermarriage is increasing however it is not widely supported and not only do many still to this day disagree with letting their offsprings marry people of different nationalities but also disagree with letting their children marry from a different tribe. I am married to someone within my family although he is not my cousin his great great great grandfather is related to mine and so we both share the same family name although we are not within the same family division.
